In contemporary Nigerian cinema, only a few figures have managed to delight audiences and remain relevant with their unparalleled talent and timeless performances. So remember to steal an autograph if you come by such a multi-talented artiste and Ada Eji Eje Mba 1 of Ngwo, who doubles as a Member of the Federal Republic (MFR). That must be a date with an Angel!

Patience Ozokwor, fondly known as “Mama G,” is an iconic figure in Nollywood, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. With her magnetic presence, exceptional acting skills, and a career spanning over three decades, Ozokwor has solidified her position as a true legend of African cinema. Known for her remarkable talent, versatility, and distinct ability to bring characters to life, she has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Despite the stereotypical role of a strong, no-nonsense, stern, and domineering mother-in-law or wicked stepmother, Patience’s performances always exuded authenticity, revealing layers of vulnerability and humanity beneath the surface. Her impeccable comedic timing and ability to elicit genuine emotion have earned her accolades and numerous awards throughout her career.

What sets Patience Ozokwor apart is her seamless ability to transition between different characters, capturing the essence of each role with remarkable originality.

Born on September 14, 1958, in the small village of Amaobo, Ngwo, in Enugu State, south-eastern Nigeria, Patience Ozokwor was raised in a close-knit family. From an early age, she exhibited a passion for the arts, entertaining those around her with her natural flair for storytelling and performing. Recognizing her innate talent, her parents supported her dreams, encouraging her to pursue acting.

“Mama G” attended Abimbola Gibson Memorial School in Lagos and later pursued a Fine and Applied Arts degree at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. After teaching for four years at WTC Secondary School in Enugu, she became a radio broadcaster. Before the station was shut down, Ozokwor was a dramatist, radio presenter, and newscaster with FRCN.

The ace actress was introduced to Nollywood by Chief Zebrudaya (Chika Okpala) and Late Pete Eneh, who were both impressed by her performance in a soap Opera titled someone cares. However, Patience Ozokwor’s breakthrough came in the late 1990s and early 2000s when she portrayed the role of the notorious “wicked stepmother” in several Nollywood movies.

 One of her breakthrough performances was in the movie “Glamour Girls” (1994), which propelled her into the limelight. However, it was her portrayal of evil and manipulative characters that earned her the moniker “Mama G” in the movie “End of the Wicked” (1999). This role showcased her exceptional acting prowess and established her as one of the finest actresses in Nollywood.

What sets Patience Ozokwor apart is her seamless ability to transition between different characters, capturing the essence of each role with remarkable originality. She has brought numerous memorable characters to life, from the wicked and domineering matriarch to the kind-hearted mother figure and comedian.

Outside acting career, Patience Ozokwor is a devoted mother and grandmother. She is known for her strong Christian faith, and in recent years, she has become an ordained evangelist, using her platform to spread messages of hope and faith. In addition, she is a philanthropist and an advocate for social change. Recognizing the importance of education, she established the Patience Ozokwor Foundation, which provides scholarships to underprivileged children in Nigeria, helping them access quality education and a chance at a brighter future.

“Mama G” has also actively campaigned against harmful cultural practices such as child marriage and domestic violence. Her work as a voice for the voiceless has garnered admiration and respect, solidifying her as an inspiration not only in the entertainment industry but also in the realm of social activism.

Throughout her illustrious career, Patience Ozokwor has appeared in over 300 movies, leaving an indelible mark on African cinema. Some of her most memorable roles include “Bitter Encounter,” “Submission,” “Mother of Mercy,” “Chief Daddy”, “Wedding Party 2“, and “Sons of Zebedee,” among many others.

Beyond her acting prowess, Ozokwor has also ventured into the world of music, releasing a gospel album titled “Mother’s Love” in 2012, among others. The album showcased her vocal talent and her status as a multi-talented entertainer.

The veteran actress got married at 19 to Mr Ozokwor, who was said to be a mechanical engineer with a civil service establishment. The screen goddess lost her husband to a terminal illness in 2000. She has three biological children, five adopted children, and 14 grandchildren.

Throughout her illustrious career, Patience Ozokwor has been honoured with numerous awards, including Best Supporting Actress in 2012 and 2013 at Africa Movie Academy Awards. In addition, she was among the top 100 Nigerians honoured by the government to celebrate the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates in 2014. Furthermore, she was recently named the highly coveted Merit Award Winner at the African Magic Viewer’s Choice Award.
